Arthroscopy & sports injury care in Ranchi.

See and treat a joint through cuts smaller than a fingernail. Keyhole surgery repairs the knee, shoulder and other joints — ACL tears, meniscus, rotator cuff — with less pain, lower risk and a faster return to sport than open surgery.

In short: Arthroscopy is keyhole joint surgery: a pencil-thin camera and fine instruments repair the joint through two or three tiny cuts. At Medifirst, Bariatu, it treats ACL tears, meniscus and rotator-cuff injuries and more — usually as day-care or a one-night stay, with walking the same day. Cost is approximately ₹60,000–1.8 lakh depending on the joint and procedure, with cashless insurance.

Quick answers

Keyhole surgery, in brief

What is it

Keyhole surgery using a pencil-thin camera (arthroscope) and fine instruments through two or three tiny cuts.

Which joints

Most often the knee and shoulder, also elbow, hip, ankle and wrist — for tears, loose bodies, cartilage and stiffness.

Recovery

Usually day-care or one night, walking the same day. Exact timing depends on what is done.

Cost

Approx. ₹60,000–1.8 lakh depending on the joint, procedure and any grafts or implants.

01 / Understanding it

What is arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is keyhole surgery for the joints. Through a cut smaller than a fingernail, the surgeon slides in a pencil-thin telescope — the arthroscope — which sends a bright, magnified picture of the inside of the joint onto a screen. Fine instruments through one or two more tiny cuts then repair the problem, without opening the joint.

It is used both to diagnose — confirming exactly what is wrong when scans are unclear — and to treat: reconstructing a torn ACL, repairing a meniscus or rotator cuff, removing loose fragments, smoothing cartilage, releasing a stiff joint or stabilising a dislocating shoulder.

Because the joint is barely disturbed, keyhole surgery means less pain, lower infection risk, smaller scars and faster recovery than open surgery. Most procedures are day-care or need only a one-night stay — a diagnostic scope takes 20–30 minutes, an ACL reconstruction 60–90 minutes.

02 / Is treatment right for you?

Keyhole, open, or neither?

Keyhole surgery is a tool, not a cure-all. It is advised only when it is genuinely the best option for your joint.

Arthroscopy often helps with

  • ACL tears and knee instability in sport
  • Meniscus (cartilage) tears
  • Rotator-cuff tears and shoulder dislocation
  • Loose fragments or cartilage damage in a joint
  • A stiff joint, or a diagnosis unclear on scans

Open surgery or non-surgery is better for

  • Very large or complex tears beyond keyhole reach
  • Major fractures or joint reconstruction
  • Advanced arthritis needing joint replacement
  • Problems that will settle with physiotherapy alone
A sports injury doesn’t always need surgery — many settle with physiotherapy. We’ll tell you honestly when keyhole surgery is the right call.
03 / What it treats

Joints & problems treated with arthroscopy

One versatile technique, applied across the body’s joints.

Knee

ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair or trim, cartilage surgery and removal of loose bodies — the most common arthroscopic joint.

Shoulder

Rotator-cuff repair, shoulder stabilisation, SLAP and labral repair, and frozen-shoulder release.

Elbow

Removal of loose bodies, treatment of stiffness and stubborn tennis elbow, and cartilage problems.

Hip

Repair of a torn labrum and treatment of impingement (FAI) in younger, active patients.

Ankle

Treatment of impingement, cartilage lesions and loose bodies after sprains and fractures.

Diagnostic scope

A direct look inside a joint to confirm the diagnosis when history, exam and scans don’t give a clear answer.

04 / Recovery

Recovery after keyhole surgery

Recovery depends on what is done inside the joint, from a quick scope to a full ACL reconstruction.

Day 0
Most patients walk with support the same day and often go home the same or next day.
Week 1–2
Desk work often resumes; a tailored physiotherapy plan begins for the specific joint.
Week 2–6
Range of movement and strength rebuild steadily under physiotherapy guidance.
6 weeks–3 months
Return to most activity; a graded return to sport for ACL and cuff repairs.
Up to 9–12 months
For an ACL reconstruction, a full, safe return to competitive sport with proper rehab.
05 / Who treats you

Two senior surgeons, one hospital.

Arthroscopy & sports-injury questions

What is arthroscopy used for?
Both to diagnose and treat joint problems — ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, rotator-cuff repair, shoulder stabilisation, removing loose fragments, cartilage surgery and releasing a stiff joint. Most often done on the knee and shoulder, and also elbow, hip, ankle and wrist.
Is arthroscopy a major surgery?
It is minimally invasive — done through cuts smaller than a fingernail, so it causes far less pain and damage than open surgery. It is still a real operation under anaesthesia, and recovery depends on what is done inside the joint.
How soon can I walk and return to work?
Most patients walk with support the same or next day. Desk work often resumes within 1 to 2 weeks; physically demanding work takes longer, in step with rehabilitation.
How long is ACL recovery before I can play sport again?
After an ACL reconstruction, a safe return to competitive sport usually takes about 9 to 12 months with a structured, graded physiotherapy program.
What is the cost of arthroscopy in Ranchi?
Typically ₹60,000 to 1.8 lakh depending on the joint, procedure and any grafts or implants — far more affordable than metros. A transparent, itemised estimate is given before admission.
Is arthroscopy covered by health insurance?
Yes. Most Indian health-insurance policies cover arthroscopic surgery. Medifirst offers a cashless facility and assists with all paperwork.
Does every sports injury need surgery?
No. Many sports injuries settle with physiotherapy, bracing and time. Surgery is advised only when a tear or instability genuinely needs it — and we tell you honestly either way.
