Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the hip in Ranchi.
Groin or hip pain that’s steadily worsening, especially if you’ve taken steroids or have sickle cell? Avascular necrosis is a serious but treatable cause — and caught early, the hip can often be saved.
AVN of the hip, in brief
Death of bone in the hip’s ball when its blood supply is cut off (osteonecrosis).
Steroids, alcohol, sickle-cell disease, injury, or sometimes no clear cause.
Untreated, the femoral head collapses and the joint is destroyed — so early diagnosis matters.
Core decompression to save an early hip; hip replacement for advanced AVN.
What AVN is, and why early matters
Avascular necrosis (AVN), also called osteonecrosis, is what happens when the blood supply to a bone is interrupted and the bone tissue dies. In the hip, it affects the femoral head — the ball of the ball-and-socket joint — and it is one of the more serious causes of hip pain in younger adults.
Common links are long-term or high-dose steroids, significant alcohol use, sickle-cell disease, and injury (such as a hip fracture or dislocation); sometimes no cause is found. The first symptom is usually groin or hip pain that steadily worsens, at first on weight-bearing and later at rest. An MRI detects AVN early, often before an X-ray shows anything.
Why early diagnosis matters so much: if AVN is caught before the bone collapses, procedures like core decompression can relieve pressure, improve blood flow and potentially save the natural hip. Once the femoral head has collapsed and the joint is damaged, the reliable solution is a hip replacement — which, done well, restores a pain-free, mobile hip.
Which treatment, and when?
The right treatment depends entirely on the stage — which is why getting assessed early is so important.
Joint-saving treatment may be possible if
- AVN is diagnosed early, before the bone collapses
- The femoral head is still round on imaging
- Pain is present but the joint is not yet destroyed
- You are younger and keen to preserve the natural hip
- There is a treatable underlying cause to address
Hip replacement is advised if
- The femoral head has collapsed
- There is established arthritis in the joint
- Pain is severe and constant, limiting life
- Joint-saving options are no longer suitable
How AVN of the hip is treated
Matched to the stage — saving the hip early, replacing it when needed.
MRI diagnosis & staging
An MRI detects AVN early and stages it, which decides the treatment.
Addressing the cause
Reducing steroids or alcohol where possible, and managing sickle cell, to protect the bone.
Core decompression
Drilling to relieve pressure and improve blood flow — can save an early-stage hip.
Protected weight-bearing
Offloading the hip and medication in selected early cases.
Hip replacement
For a collapsed or arthritic joint — a durable, pain-free, mobile hip.
Rehabilitation
Guided recovery to restore strength and movement after treatment.
What to expect
The path depends on the stage — and on catching AVN before the joint collapses.
