HPV vaccination in Ranchi.
Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers we can largely prevent — with a simple vaccine. HPV vaccination protects girls and women against the virus that causes most of it.
HPV vaccination, in brief
The HPV strains that cause most cervical cancer, plus some other cancers and genital warts.
Most effective before exposure — ideally in the pre-teen/teen years, but valuable for many adults too.
A course of injections; the number depends on age at the first dose.
Vaccination plus regular Pap smears gives the strongest protection.
A cancer you can largely prevent
Cervical cancer is one of the leading cancers in Indian women — and one of the few that is largely preventable. Almost all of it is caused by persistent infection with certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus. The HPV vaccine protects against those strains.
The vaccine works best when given before exposure to the virus, which is why it is recommended for girls and boys in the pre-teen and teenage years. But many adult women also benefit, and Dr. Agarwal advises on whether and when it makes sense for you or your daughter, and how many doses are needed (which depends on the age at the first dose).
HPV vaccination is safe and highly effective. Combined with regular Pap smear screening, it offers the strongest protection there is against cervical cancer — prevention and early detection together.
Who should be vaccinated?
Earlier is better — but it’s worth discussing at many ages.
Consider HPV vaccination for
- Pre-teen and teenage girls (the ideal age)
- Teenage boys, too — it protects them and reduces spread
- Young adult women not vaccinated earlier
- Parents wanting to protect their daughters
- Anyone wanting to discuss whether it’s right for them
How it works
- A short course of injections
- Number of doses depends on age at first dose
- Given before exposure for best effect
- Combined with Pap screening later in life
- Safe, with only mild, brief side-effects for most
