ACL reconstruction in Ranchi.

A torn ACL doesn’t have to end your sport. Arthroscopic (keyhole) ACL reconstruction rebuilds the knee’s key stabilising ligament, and with structured rehab, gets active people back to the game — often stronger.

In short: The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is a key stabiliser of the knee, commonly torn in sport by a sudden twist or landing. When the knee keeps giving way, arthroscopic (keyhole) ACL reconstruction rebuilds it using a graft, through tiny cuts. At Medifirst, Bariatu, it is done as day-care or a short stay, with a graded rehab programme and a safe return to sport usually in 9–12 months.

Quick answers

ACL reconstruction, in brief

What is the ACL

A key ligament that stabilises the knee, often torn by a twist or awkward landing in sport.

Do all tears need surgery

No. An inactive person may manage without; an active person or athlete usually needs reconstruction for a stable knee.

The surgery

Arthroscopic (keyhole) reconstruction with a graft, through tiny cuts — day-care or a short stay.

Return to sport

A graded rehab programme, with a safe return to sport usually in 9–12 months.

01 / Understanding it

What an ACL tear means

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) runs through the middle of the knee and stops the shin bone sliding forward — it is one of the knee’s most important stabilisers. It is commonly torn in sport (cricket, football, kabaddi, badminton) by a sudden twist, pivot or awkward landing, often with a “pop”, swelling, and a knee that then feels unstable.

Not every ACL tear needs surgery. A less active person may cope with physiotherapy and bracing. But for an active adult or athlete — or anyone whose knee keeps giving way — the ligament does not heal on its own, and leaving it can damage the cartilage over time. That is when reconstruction is advised.

ACL reconstruction is done arthroscopically (keyhole): the torn ligament is replaced with a graft, positioned precisely through tiny cuts, with the whole knee checked for associated meniscus or cartilage damage at the same time. Success depends as much on the rehabilitation afterwards as on the surgery itself.

02 / Is treatment right for you?

Do you need ACL surgery?

The decision depends on your knee’s stability and how active you want to be — not on the scan alone.

Reconstruction is usually advised if

  • Your knee gives way or feels unstable
  • You play pivoting sports or have a physically active life
  • There is an associated meniscus or cartilage tear
  • Bracing and physiotherapy haven’t restored stability
  • You are young and want to stay active long-term

Non-surgical may suit if

  • You lead a low-demand, non-pivoting lifestyle
  • The knee is stable in daily activities
  • You can achieve your goals with rehab and bracing
  • Surgery’s risks outweigh the benefit for you
A torn ACL often comes with a meniscus tear — both are checked and treated in the same keyhole procedure.
03 / The procedure

How ACL reconstruction works

Keyhole surgery, then rehab — the two halves of a strong result.

Assessment & MRI

Examination and an MRI confirm the ACL tear and any associated meniscus or cartilage damage.

Graft choice

A graft (usually from your own hamstring) is prepared to replace the torn ligament.

Arthroscopic reconstruction

The graft is placed precisely through keyhole cuts, and the whole knee is checked and treated.

Early rehabilitation

Movement and gentle strengthening start soon after surgery, guided by physiotherapy.

Graded strengthening

Progressive strengthening and balance work over the following months.

Return to sport

Sport-specific training and a safe, tested return to play at around 9–12 months.

04 / Recovery

Recovery & return to sport

Rehab is the half that people underestimate — and the half that decides the outcome.

Week 0–2
Day-care or short stay; swelling controlled, early movement and quadriceps activation begin.
Week 2–6
Walking normalises, range of movement restored, gentle strengthening progresses.
Week 6–12
Strength and balance build; low-impact fitness like cycling and swimming.
3–6 months
Running and sport-specific drills under guidance.
9–12 months
A tested, graded return to competitive sport once strength and control are proven.

07 / Your questions, answered

ACL questions, answered

Does an ACL tear always need surgery?
No. A less active person with a stable knee may manage with physiotherapy and bracing. Reconstruction is advised for active people, athletes, or anyone whose knee keeps giving way, because the ligament does not heal on its own.
How long before I can play sport again?
With a torn ACL reconstructed and proper rehabilitation, a safe, graded return to competitive sport usually takes about 9 to 12 months. Rushing back early risks re-injury.
Is ACL surgery done by keyhole?
Yes. ACL reconstruction is done arthroscopically through tiny cuts, which means less pain, a lower infection risk and a faster early recovery than open surgery.
What graft is used?
Most often a graft from your own hamstring tendon is used to rebuild the ligament. Your surgeon discusses the options and what suits your knee and activity best.
Will I need physiotherapy?
Yes — and it is essential. The structured rehabilitation after surgery is as important as the operation itself in achieving a strong, stable knee and a safe return to sport.
Is ACL surgery covered by insurance?
Most health-insurance policies cover ACL reconstruction. Medifirst offers a cashless facility and a clear estimate before surgery.
