Rotator cuff tear treatment in Ranchi.

Pain lifting your arm, weakness reaching overhead, an ache that disturbs your sleep? A rotator cuff problem is one of the commonest causes of shoulder pain — and most are treated without major surgery.

In short: The rotator cuff is the group of muscles and tendons that move and stabilise the shoulder. Wear, impingement or a tear causes pain on lifting the arm, weakness and disturbed sleep. At Medifirst, Bariatu, many cuff problems settle with physiotherapy and injections; a significant tear is repaired arthroscopically (keyhole). Where a cuff is torn beyond repair with arthritis, a reverse shoulder replacement is the answer.

Quick answers

Rotator cuff tear, in brief

What is it

Wear or a tear of the cuff tendons that move and stabilise the shoulder.

Symptoms

Pain lifting the arm, weakness reaching overhead, and an ache that disturbs sleep.

Treatment

Many settle with physiotherapy and injections; a significant tear needs keyhole repair.

If beyond repair

A cuff torn beyond repair with arthritis is treated with reverse shoulder replacement.

01 / Understanding it

What the rotator cuff does

The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons that wrap around the shoulder, lifting the arm and holding the ball in its socket. Because the shoulder is so mobile, the cuff works hard — and is a common source of pain as it wears, gets pinched (impingement), or tears.

A cuff problem typically causes pain on lifting the arm or reaching overhead, weakness, and a deep ache that disturbs sleep, especially lying on that side. Tears can be partial or full-thickness, from gradual wear or a sudden injury. An MRI shows the size and nature of the tear.

Most rotator cuff problems are treated without major surgery: physiotherapy to strengthen and rebalance the shoulder, with an injection to settle pain. A significant or full-thickness tear, or one not improving, is repaired arthroscopically (keyhole). Where a cuff is torn beyond repair and the joint is arthritic, a reverse shoulder replacement restores movement.

02 / Is treatment right for you?

Does your cuff tear need surgery?

Most don’t at first — the decision depends on the tear, your symptoms and your response to treatment.

Repair is usually advised if

  • A full-thickness tear, especially after a sudden injury
  • Weakness that limits lifting or overhead use
  • Pain and weakness not improving with physiotherapy
  • An active person who needs shoulder strength
  • A tear at risk of enlarging if left

Non-surgical first if

  • A partial tear or impingement without major weakness
  • Pain that responds to physiotherapy and injection
  • A low-demand shoulder in daily life
  • When surgery’s risks outweigh the benefit
A cuff torn beyond repair, together with arthritis, is exactly what reverse shoulder replacement is designed for.
03 / Treatment

How a rotator cuff tear is treated

The least invasive option that restores a strong, pain-free shoulder.

Diagnosis & MRI

Examination and an MRI confirm the type and size of the cuff tear.

Physiotherapy

A structured programme to strengthen and rebalance the shoulder — often enough.

Injection

A targeted injection to settle pain and allow rehabilitation to progress.

Arthroscopic repair

Keyhole re-attachment of the torn tendon for a significant or full-thickness tear.

Linked

Reverse shoulder replacement

For a cuff torn beyond repair with arthritis — the deltoid powers the arm instead.

Guided rehabilitation

A recovery plan protecting the repair while restoring movement and strength.

04 / Recovery

Recovery after cuff repair

A repaired tendon needs time to heal before strengthening — patience pays off.

Week 0–2
Arm in a sling after repair; gentle movements as guided, pain controlled.
Week 2–6
Passive movement progresses under physiotherapy; sling gradually weaned.
Week 6–12
Active movement and light strengthening begin as the tendon heals.
3–4 months
Reaching, dressing and daily use return for most.
4–6 months
Strength continues to build toward full function.

Rotator cuff questions

Does a rotator cuff tear need surgery?
Not usually at first. Most cuff problems improve with physiotherapy and an injection. Surgery (keyhole repair) is advised for a significant or full-thickness tear, weakness that limits use, or a tear not improving with treatment.
Is rotator cuff repair keyhole?
Yes, in most cases. Arthroscopic (keyhole) repair re-attaches the torn tendon through tiny cuts, with less pain and a faster early recovery than open surgery.
How long is recovery after a cuff repair?
The arm is protected in a sling early on, with movement and then strengthening progressing over the following months. Most daily use returns by 3 to 4 months, with strength building toward 6 months. Patience protects the repair.
What if my cuff is torn too badly to repair?
When a cuff is torn beyond repair and the joint is arthritic, a reverse shoulder replacement restores movement by letting the deltoid muscle power the arm — a procedure our team was the first to perform in Jharkhand.
Why does my shoulder hurt more at night?
A rotator cuff problem often aches most lying down, especially on the affected side, which disturbs sleep. It is a classic feature and worth getting assessed.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Surgical treatment is covered by most health-insurance policies, with cashless facility at Medifirst. Out-patient physiotherapy and injections are usually paid directly and are inexpensive.
