Sciatica treatment in Ranchi.

Burning or shooting pain from your lower back down the leg? Sciatica is common and, in most people, settles without surgery — once the cause is found and treated properly.

In short: Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back down the leg because the sciatic nerve is irritated, usually by a slipped (herniated) disc or spinal narrowing. At Medifirst, Bariatu, most sciatica is treated without surgery — physiotherapy, medication and targeted injections — and around 8 in 10 patients recover. Surgery is minimally invasive and reserved for a nerve that stays significantly compressed.
Emergency: loss of bladder/bowel control, numbness around the groin, or rapidly worsening leg weakness needs care immediately — call +91 92418 91433.

Sciatica, in brief

What is it

Leg pain from irritation of the sciatic nerve — usually a slipped disc or spinal narrowing.

Treatment

Physiotherapy, medication and injections — most people recover without surgery.

When surgery

Only if a nerve stays significantly compressed — and then minimally invasive.

01 / Understanding it

What causes sciatica

Sciatica isn’t a diagnosis in itself — it is a symptom: pain that radiates from the lower back, through the buttock and down the leg, because the sciatic nerve or one of its roots is being irritated or compressed. The commonest cause is a slipped (herniated) disc pressing on the nerve; others include spinal narrowing (stenosis) and, less often, a slipping vertebra.

The pain is typically burning, shooting or electric, often worse than the back pain itself, and may come with numbness, tingling or weakness in the leg or foot. An MRI shows exactly which disc or level is responsible when that matters.

The reassuring reality is that around 8 in 10 people recover without any operation. Treatment starts conservatively — staying gently active, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medication, and a targeted nerve-root or epidural injection for stubborn pain. Surgery is considered only when a nerve stays significantly compressed, weakness is progressing, or pain simply won’t settle — and then it is minimally invasive (endoscopic or microdiscectomy), freeing the nerve through a tiny incision.

02 / Is treatment right for you?

Most sciatica does not need surgery

Conservative care comes first — but some signs mean you should be seen promptly.

Get seen soon if you have

  • Leg pain, numbness or tingling that keeps spreading
  • Weakness in the leg or foot, or a foot that drags
  • Pain not settling after 6 weeks of proper care
  • An MRI showing a large disc herniation
  • (Emergency) loss of bladder/bowel control or groin numbness

Conservative care tried first

  • Staying gently active — rest makes it worse
  • Physiotherapy and core strengthening
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • A targeted nerve-root or epidural injection
  • Posture and ergonomic changes

03 / Treatment

How sciatica is treated

The lowest level of intervention that frees the nerve and relieves the pain.

Diagnosis

Examination and, where needed, an MRI to find which nerve and level is affected.

Stay active & physiotherapy

Gentle activity and a targeted programme — the foundation of recovery.

Medication

Anti-inflammatory and nerve-pain medicines to control symptoms while you heal.

Nerve-root / epidural injection

A targeted injection to settle stubborn nerve pain and avoid surgery.

Endoscopic / microdiscectomy

Minimally invasive surgery to free the nerve, if it stays significantly compressed.

Rehabilitation

Core strengthening to recover fully and reduce the chance of recurrence.

04 / Recovery

07 / Your questions, answered

Sciatica questions, answered

Does sciatica need surgery?
Usually not. Around 8 in 10 people recover with staying active, physiotherapy, medication and sometimes a targeted injection. Surgery is reserved for a nerve that stays significantly compressed, progressing weakness, or pain that won’t settle.
How long does sciatica take to settle?
Most sciatica improves within a few weeks with the right care, though it can take longer. Nerve pain often eases before the tingling or numbness fully resolves. Staying gently active helps — bed rest makes it worse.
What causes sciatica?
Most often a slipped (herniated) disc pressing on the sciatic nerve; also spinal narrowing (stenosis) or a slipping vertebra. Finding the exact cause guides treatment.
When is sciatica an emergency?
Seek immediate care if you develop loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or rapidly worsening leg weakness — these can signal serious nerve compression. Call the ambulance on +91 92418 91433.
Will an injection cure my sciatica?
A targeted nerve-root or epidural injection often settles stubborn nerve pain and allows recovery to continue, helping many people avoid surgery. It is one step in a plan, not a standalone cure.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Out-patient care is usually paid directly and is inexpensive. Any surgery is covered by most health-insurance policies, with cashless facility at Medifirst.
