Quick answers

Spine & back pain, in brief

What is it

Diagnosis and treatment of spine problems — from physiotherapy and injections to advanced minimally invasive disc and nerve procedures.

Who needs it

People with a slipped disc, sciatica, spondylosis, spinal stenosis, scoliosis or a spine fracture — especially with numbness or weakness.

Recovery

After a minimally invasive procedure, most patients walk the same/next day and go home in 1–3 days.

Cost

Approx. ₹1.5–4 lakh depending on the procedure — far more affordable than metros.

01 / Understanding it

What causes back and neck pain?

Your spine is a column of small bones (vertebrae) cushioned by soft intervertebral discs and threaded by the spinal cord and nerves. When a disc bulges or slips, when bone spurs form, or when the spinal canal narrows, those nerves get pinched — and the result is back pain, neck pain, sciatica, numbness or weakness that can radiate down the leg or arm.

Most back pain is mechanical and settles with rest, physiotherapy and time. But a slipped (herniated) disc, spinal stenosis or an unstable spine can keep pressing on a nerve, and no amount of painkillers fixes the root cause. That is when a proper evaluation by an experienced surgeon matters most.

Our approach is to find the exact source of pain with a careful examination, X-rays and MRI — then treat it at the lowest level of intervention that works. Surgery, when needed, is minimally invasive, protecting muscle and speeding recovery. Free the trapped nerve early and over 9 in 10 patients recover fully.

02 / Is treatment right for you?

Most back pain does not need surgery

Around 8 in 10 patients recover without an operation. Surgery is recommended only when nerve compression is clearly proven and conservative care has genuinely failed.

Get evaluated soon if you have

  • Leg or arm pain, numbness or tingling that keeps spreading
  • Weakness in a foot, leg or hand, or a foot that drags
  • Back or neck pain not settled after 6 weeks of proper care
  • An MRI showing a large disc herniation or nerve compression
  • (Emergency) loss of bladder/bowel control or groin numbness

Conservative care tried first

  • Physiotherapy, posture correction and core strengthening
  • Anti-inflammatory medicines and short activity modification
  • Targeted nerve-root or epidural injections for pain relief
  • Weight management and ergonomic changes at work
Sudden loss of bladder/bowel control or rapidly worsening leg weakness is an emergency — seek care immediately. For everything else, conservative care comes first.
03 / Conditions & options

Spine conditions we treat

From common back pain to complex disorders — accurately diagnosed, and the least invasive effective treatment chosen.

Slipped / Herniated Disc

A bulging or ruptured disc pressing on a nerve, causing sharp back pain that often shoots down the leg. Treated with physiotherapy, injections or endoscopic/microdisc surgery.

Sciatica

Burning or shooting pain from the lower back down the leg from a pinched sciatic nerve. Most cases improve without surgery once the cause is treated.

Spondylosis (neck & back)

Age-related wear causing stiffness, neck pain and radiating symptoms. Managed medically, and surgically only when severe.

Spinal Stenosis

Narrowing of the spinal canal that squeezes the nerves, causing leg pain on walking. Relieved with decompression when conservative care fails.

Scoliosis & Deformity

Abnormal curve of the spine in children or adults, assessed and corrected with bracing or deformity-correction surgery.

Spine Fractures & Trauma

Vertebral fractures from injury or osteoporosis, treated with bracing or minimally invasive vertebroplasty / kyphoplasty.

04 / Recovery

Recovery after spine surgery

For minimally invasive procedures; fusion and deformity surgery need a longer, staged recovery explained clearly in advance.

Day 0–1
Walking with support the same or next day. Nerve pain often eases immediately.
Day 1–3
Discharge home for most minimally invasive procedures; gentle walking encouraged.
Week 2–4
Return to desk work and light routine. Guided physiotherapy rebuilds core and back strength.
Week 4–8
Most daily activities resumed; walking distance and stamina grow.
2–3 months
Full functional recovery for most patients, with a strong core protecting the spine.

Spine & back pain questions, answered

Does a slipped disc always need surgery?
No. Most slipped (herniated) discs improve within 6 to 12 weeks with physiotherapy, medication and, if needed, injections. Surgery is considered only when there is significant nerve compression, weakness or pain that does not settle with proper conservative care.
Can back pain be treated without surgery?
In most cases it should be. Around 8 in 10 patients recover with physiotherapy, posture correction, medication, activity changes and targeted injections. Surgery is reserved for proven nerve compression or instability.
What is minimally invasive (endoscopic) spine surgery?
Surgery through a very small incision using an endoscope or microscope instead of a large open cut. It protects the back muscles, causes less blood loss and pain, and lets most patients walk the same day and go home within 1 to 3 days.
Is spine surgery safe? Will I be paralysed?
Modern spinal surgery is very safe. Minimally invasive techniques and nerve monitoring make serious complications rare. The greater risk in most cases is leaving nerve compression untreated. The specific risks for your condition are explained honestly before any decision.
What is the cost of spine surgery in Ranchi?
Typically ₹1.5 to 4 lakh depending on the procedure, number of levels and implants. Endoscopic disc surgery is at the lower end; fusion and deformity correction cost more. A transparent estimate is given before admission.
When is back pain an emergency?
Seek immediate care if you develop loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or inner thighs, or rapidly worsening leg weakness. These can signal serious nerve compression needing urgent evaluation.
What is sciatica and how is it treated?
Sciatica is pain travelling from the lower back down the leg because the sciatic nerve is irritated, usually by a slipped disc or stenosis. Most cases settle with physiotherapy, medication and injections; surgery is needed only if a nerve stays significantly compressed.
