Elbow pain, in brief

Tennis elbow

Pain on the outer elbow with gripping and lifting — very common, and usually settles.

Pain that limits daily use, a locked or very stiff elbow, or pain after an injury.

01 / Understanding it

What’s causing your elbow pain

The elbow is a hard-working hinge, and pain there usually has a specific, treatable cause. By far the commonest is tennis elbow (and its inner-side cousin, golfer’s elbow) — an overuse strain of the tendons where they attach to the bone, causing pain on gripping and lifting. Despite the name, most sufferers have never played tennis.

Other causes include stiffness after injury, loose fragments of bone or cartilage in the joint, a trapped nerve (the “funny bone” nerve), and arthritis. After a fall or blow, pain and swelling may signal a fracture or ligament injury that needs assessment. Getting the right diagnosis is what points to the right treatment.

The good news is that the great majority of elbow problems settle without major surgery — with activity change, physiotherapy to strengthen and stretch, and a targeted injection for stubborn tennis elbow. Where a problem doesn’t settle — persistent stiffness, loose bodies, or a stubborn tendon — keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery treats it through tiny cuts, with a quick recovery.

02 / Is treatment right for you?

What kind of elbow problem?

The right treatment depends on the cause — which is why assessment comes first.

Surgery may help if you have

  • Tennis elbow that hasn’t settled with proper treatment
  • A locked elbow or loose body catching in the joint
  • Persistent stiffness limiting bend or straightening
  • A trapped nerve causing numbness or weakness
  • An injury (fracture, ligament) needing repair

Non-surgical first for

  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow (most cases)
  • Mild stiffness that responds to physiotherapy
  • Pain that eases with rest and activity change
  • Problems settling with an injection
A fracture or injury after a fall is assessed as trauma — with X-ray on site, 24×7.
03 / Treatment

Elbow pain questions

What is tennis elbow?
An overuse strain of the tendons on the outer side of the elbow, causing pain on gripping and lifting. It is very common — and most people with it have never played tennis. The great majority settle with rest, physiotherapy and sometimes an injection.
Does elbow pain need surgery?
Usually not. Most elbow problems, including tennis elbow, settle with activity change, physiotherapy and injections. Keyhole surgery is reserved for stubborn cases, loose bodies, persistent stiffness or a trapped nerve.
How long does tennis elbow take to heal?
It can take several weeks to months to settle fully, but the right treatment speeds recovery and controls pain. Patience and consistent physiotherapy are key; an injection helps stubborn cases.
My elbow is stiff after an injury — can it be treated?
Yes. Post-injury stiffness is common and often improves with physiotherapy; a keyhole procedure can release a stubbornly stiff elbow or remove loose fragments catching in the joint.
I have numbness in my little finger — what is that?
That can be a trapped nerve at the elbow (the “funny bone” nerve). It is assessed and, where needed, treated with a nerve-release procedure to relieve the numbness and protect strength.
Is treatment covered by insurance?
Surgical treatment is covered by most health-insurance policies, with cashless facility at Medifirst. Out-patient physiotherapy and injections are usually paid directly and are inexpensive.
